What’s the Problem?
Viekira Pak was manufactured by AbbVie as a treatment for genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C in adults, including people with compensated cirrhosis. The initial FDA approval was allegedly based on incomplete studies which found that Viekira Pak cured 90% of hepatitis patients who took the drug. Less than a year after its approval in December 2014, Viekira Pak was the subject of an FDA Drug Safety Alert regarding an increased risk for liver disease.
Viekira Pak Liver Disease Warning
On December 22, 2015, FDA required that the labeling of Viekira Pak and Technivie (another hepatitis C drug manufactured by AbbVie) be updated with a warning about a potential risk of serious liver injury. In a review of submitted adverse event reports, the agency discovered at least 26 cases of hepatic decompensation and liver failure that in some instances resulted in a liver transplant or death. In most cases these injuries occurred in less than one month after starting treatment with Viekira Pak or Technivie.

The initial symptoms of liver failure can be mistaken for any number of other ailments. For this reason, the disease is often not diagnosed until its advanced stages. Early symptoms include:
- Loss of appetite
As liver failure progresses, the symptoms become more serious, requiring urgent care. These symptoms include:
- Bleeding easily
- Swollen abdomen
- Mental disorientation or confusion (known as hepatic encephalopathy)

Is There a Class Action?
Not class action lawsuit has been filed in the Viekira Pak litigation, and it is unlikely that any such action will be entered in the near future. Our lawyers are currently only accepting potential individual claims on behalf of people who took Viekira Pak for genotype 1 chronic hepatitis C infection (including those with compensated cirrhosis) and subsequently developed liver failure, required a liver transplant, or died from liver disease. Serious liver injury must have occurred within 1 to 4 weeks of initiating treatment with Technivie. Contact us today to learn more about your legal rights.
