What’s the Problem?
On March 15, 2017, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) warned that Viberzi could increase the risk of pancreatitis in patients who had their gallbladders removed. These injuries are severe and could result in hospitalization or death, according to the FDA.
Viberzi and Pancreatitis
Viberzi has been linked to at least 2 deaths and 120 reports of serious pancreatitis since it was approved in May 2015. Of the 120 reports, 76 cases required hospitalization and 2 of those patients died. In most cases pancreatitis occurred after the first 1 or 2 doses of Viberzi, but in others the complication occurred after prolonged use.
The type of pancreatitis associated with Viberzi is acute pancreatitis, which comes on rapidly (sometimes in as little as a few days). Symptoms include:
- Upper abdominal pain
- Abdominal pain that radiates to your back
- Abdominal pain that feels worse after eating
- Rapid pulse
- Tenderness when touching the abdomen
Viberzi and Gallbladder Removal
Of the 120 cases reported to the FDA, 68 included details on the patient’s gallbladder status. Fifty-six patients with adverse events had prior gallbladder removal surgery. Both deaths occurred in patients who did not have a gallbladder.
One of the deaths was attributed to severe pancreatitis, during which the victim had extreme abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting within an hour of taking Viberzi. Both deaths occurred within three days of their first Viberzi dose, according to the FDA.
Is There a Class Action?
The problems with Viberzi have only recently come to light, and no class action lawsuit has been filed over injuries alleged from the drug. However, our lawyers are filing individual lawsuits for people who developed inflammation of the pancreas and pancreatitis after taking Viberzi.
