Viagra Melanoma Lawsuit Filed in Michigan

A Texas man has filed a products liability lawsuit against Pfizer & Co. alleging that Viagra caused him to develop melanoma skin cancer.

A Texas man has filed a products liability lawsuit against Pfizer & Co. alleging that the erectile dysfunction (ED) drug Viagra (generic: sildenafil) caused him to develop melanoma skin cancer.

What’s the Problem?

August 21, 2016 – According to the lawsuit, Plaintiff Steve Durham was prescribed Viagra in 2011 by his doctor to use as needed. In August 2014 Durham was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, the most aggressive and life-threatening form of skin cancer, according to the complaint.

In April 2014, a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) found that men with a history of Viagra use were twice as likely to be diagnosed with melanoma, while men currently using the drug faced an 84% increased risk.

Durham claims that Pfizer designed, manufactured, distributed and sold Viagra, intentionally concealed or misrepresented the risks, dangers and defects associated with the medication, and failed to conduct analysis of adverse event reports.

The complaint was filed July 25 in St. Clair County Circuit Court, Michigan, under case number 16-L-393. Plaintiff is seeking a jury trial and damages in excess of $50,000, plus interest, costs of suit, attorney fees and any other relief the court deems fit.
