What’s the problem?

November 10, 2011 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) announced today that United Natural Foods, Inc., is currently recalling the following types of Gentes Foods Gordita Black Bean Tortillas because they have the potential to be contaminated with Clostridium botulinum:

  • GENTES FOODS 10 OZ GORDITA BLACK BEAN TORTILLAS UPC 618032102021

These products were distributed to the following supermarket stores:

  • Safeway #1110: 1546 N Main in Salinas, CA
  • Safeway #2840: 2010 Freedom Blvd in Watsonville, CA
  • Pak N Save #3116: 2255 Gellert Blvd in San Francisco, CA
  • Pak N Save #3125: 3889 San Pablo Ave in Emeryville, CA

The items in question are packed as six tortillas in a vacuum packaged clear sleeve, and can be identified by a white sticker with a date code that reads ’12 7 11’. The packages are approximately 10oz in size, and an orange label is on a clear wrapper with white lettering.

This recall was initiated because it was found that there was a lack of temperature control during the distribution process. United Natural Foods accidentally exposed the recalled tortillas to temperature ranges above those recommended by the manufacturer.

To date, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with this recall. Consumers who have purchased tortillas included in this recall should not consume them (even if they look or smell normal), and are urged to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. If you are concerned about botulism food poisoning, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.
