Jennie-O Recalls 91,000 Pounds of Turkey for Salmonella
November 19, 2018 – The first brand name involved in the nationwide salmonella outbreak linked to raw turkey has been revealed as Jennie-O, which recalled more than 91,000 pounds of turkey on Thursday, according to the FSIS. The recalled turkey was distributed in 1-pound packages to retailers across the U.S. Consumers who purchased these products are urged not to eat them, and to either discard them immediately or return them to the point of purchase for a full refund.
products affected by the recall include 1-pound packages of raw, ground turkey that were distributed to retailers across the U.S.
What’s the problem?
CDC recently updated its map of salmonella cases associated with the turkey products for the first time since July, indicating new reports in Arizona, Connecticut, and Oklahoma. At the time of the July update, the outbreak covered 26 states.
Consumer Reports is demanding that the USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) release specific information relating to brand names the potentially contaminated turkey was sold under. There has yet been no word on this matter.
Most people infected with salmonella bacteria experience diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps between 12 and 72 hours of consuming the offending product, CDC said. Those most likely to develop serious reactions to the bacterium include very young children, the elderly population, and people with compromised immune systems.
How Severe is Salmonella Reading?
CDC tested samples of the bacteria from people who had gotten sick and found that some of the bacteria showed signs of being resistant to antibiotics. However, the agency says that the antibiotics the bacteria were resistant to aren’t the ones usually used in treating salmonella infections.
