What’s the Problem?
October 30, 2017 – According to the lawsuit (PDF), all 6 plaintiffs sustained severe burn injuries as a result of the Tristar Power Pressure Cooker XL having a lid that is able to be rotated and opened while still pressurized, causing its “scalding hot contents to be forcefully ejected from the Pressure Cooker and onto [plaintiff].”
The owner’s manual for the Power Pressure Cooker XL Model No. PPC-790 describes a lid safety device that “[p]revents pressure build-up if lid is not closed properly and prevents lid from opening until all pressure is released,” according to the lawsuit. A YouTube marketing video featuring culinary expert Eric Theiss assures consumers that, “when your Pressure Cooker is up to pressure, the lid locks on. I couldn’t get this lid open if I wanted to.”
Well, maybe you couldn’t get the lid off, Eric, but apparently all 6 plaintiffs in the class action could, and were left with catastrophic, potentially life-ending injuries as a result.
Damages named in the complaint include:
- Strict liability
- Marketing of the pressure cookers
- Breach of express and implied warranties
- Violation of state consumer protection law.
The lawsuit was filed September 19, 2017, in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas as In Re: Kenneth Christian, et al. v. Tristar Products Inc. Case Number 170902183.
