Trinity Industries, the Texas company accused of manufacturing defective highway guardrails that have killed at least 5 motorists and injured dozens of others, held a posh lobbing blitz at the Four Seasons Hotel on the Las Vegas Strip in an attempt to salvage its once-sterling reputation. Trinity representatives have been courting attorney generals and political organizations on both sides of the aisle since 2012, after a whistleblower lawsuit was filed against the company over guardrails that allegedly malfunctioned, spearing through vehicles and their occupants.

What’s the Problem?
Trinity’s Vegas showcase, which was sponsored by the Democratic Attorneys General Association and attended by attorney generals from at least 4 different states, is the latest example of how a once low-profile company can be forced into an increasingly aggressive campaign to regain its status.
Even before a Texas jury ruled against Trinity in a landmark whistleblower lawsuit in Oct. 2014, the company had become one of the nation’s top donors to attorney general political causes. Over the past 2 years, Trinity has contributed $300,000 to the Democratic Attorneys General Association and the Republican Attorneys General Association, after not donating in the two previous years, according to campaign finance records. The generous contributions began after state and federal officials started investigating a secret design change Trinity made to its guardrail systems in 2005.
Last year, the company donated to the political campaigns of attorney general candidates in at least 10 different states, and dispatched a team of lobbyists and lawyers to make appeals around the country. The effort has included face-to-face meetings with Attorney General Pam Bondi of Florida and Attorney General Mike DeWine of Ohio, among others.
“Trinity Industries routinely participates in a wide variety of political and industry trade groups and interacts with public officials at various events as well as offices,” said Jeff Eller. “We offer the opportunity to all elected officials to meet with Trinity Industries in order to inform them about our businesses and their constituents,” a company spokesperson said in a statement.
