Federal and state transportation officials have gathered in San Antonio, TX, to observe safety testing for a potentially hazardous highway guardrail system made by Trinity Industries. More than 30 states have banned the guardrails, which have been linked to dozens of injuries and deaths caused by an alleged design flaw that causes the devices to lock up and pierce vehicles after an impact.

What’s the Problem?
December 12, 2014 – The first Trinity guardrail crash tests are scheduled to take place over the next few weeks, and are designed to replicate new-to-market testing performed nearly a decade ago, when the ET-Plus guardrail system was first introduced.
Critics, including lawmakers and lawyers for accident victims, say the tests are not enough to determine if the guardrails are safe. They have called for additional testing to address the devices’ known vulnerabilities.
Tony Furst, associate safety administrator at the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), said the tests were “one step of many,” and not necessarily aimed at testing the alleged safety defect. Furst said the FHWA’s goal was first to “re-baseline the device” by ensuring the original tests were adequately performed. The agency may order additional testing in the future.
Wednesday’s first test involved crashing a pickup truck into a Trinity Guardrail at a 15° angle. However, many accidents involved vehicles that crashed into guardrails at shallower angles. Furst said no definitive results would be released until a set of eight crashes, expected to be completed next month, had been analyzed by transportation authorities.
