Trinity Guardrail Safety Tests Resume in San Antonio

Highway guardrails made by Trinity Industries were put to the test again yesterday, the 4th in a series of 8 crash tests.

Jan. 7, 2014 – Highway guardrails made by Trinity Industries were put to the test again yesterday, the 4th in a series of 8 crash tests. The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) ordered the tests after reports surfaced of Trinity guardrails failing, locking up and spearing through vehicles rather than absorbing the impact as designed.

What’s the Problem?

During Tuesday’s tests at the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in San Antonio, TX, a Geo Metro crashed head-on into a 4 inch Trinity ET-Plus guardrail at 62 miles per hour.

“It spun probably 1 1/2 turns and it came to a rest there in the lane that it had been traveling in,” said ABC News producer Tonya Kerr, who observed the crash test. “The guardrail literally crumpled into kind of a zigzag pattern.”

FHWA safety administrator Tony Furst said the guardrail system performed as expected.

“After the car struck the end terminal, it pushed approximately 15 feet of guardrail through the head, including one set of splice bolts,” Furst said.

While SwRI has been consistent in testing guardrails of the same height, the exit gaps have varied as much as a quarter of an inch. Yesterday’s crash was the last to test Trinity’s 27 3/4-inch height guardrail.

“Of the four remaining tests, the heads that have the smallest exit gap will be chosen for the head-on tests,” Furst said.

The next test is scheduled for Jan. 14, weather permitting.
