Trinity Guardrail Safety Test Failed: Engineer

A document filed by an engineering expert claims that the Trinity Et-Plus guardrail system failed the last of its 8 crash tests.

A document filed with a federal judge in Texas by an engineering expert claims that the Trinity Et-Plus guardrail system failed the last of its 8 crash tests in San Antonio on Jan. 27. Attorneys for Joshua Harman, the whistleblower who won a lawsuit against Trinity Industries in Oct. 2014, retained the engineer who said the test failed.

What’s the Problem?

The engineering expert, Brian Coon, said the ET-Plus end terminal failed the crash test when it punctured the driver-side door of a compact car. Photos captured from the test show a large dent in the driver-side of the vehicle.

“In my opinion, the January 27, 2015, test of the ET-Plus guardrail end terminal failed NCHRP Report 350 Criteria D, “Deformations of, or intrusions into, the occupant compartment that could cause serious injuries should not be permitted,'” Coon said in his affidavit. “The deformation of the driver’s side door in the January 27 crash test not only could have caused disabling injuries, but showed a propensity to penetrate the vehicle and cause devastating injuries. This was a clear failure under NCHRP Report 350 guidelines.”

The safety tests were ordered by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) after a Texas jury ruled that Trinity had defrauded the federal government by secretly changing the design of its ET-Plus end terminal. Data collected during the tests is still being analyzed. Once the test report is complete, it will be reviewed by FHWA officials and an expert from Virginia Tech. The results are expected to be released later this month.
