Concerns Raised Over Trinity Guardrail Safety Tests

Highway guardrails made by Trinity Industries have come under fire once again, even as safety tests are underway to determine whether they’re safe.

Highway guardrails made by Trinity Industries have come under fire once again, even as safety tests are underway to determine whether they’re safe. Dozens of accidents — some fatal — have occurred in cars that have run off the road and collided with guardrails that malfunction and spear the vehicles, rather than ribboning out and absorbing the impact of the crash as designed.

What’s the Problem?

Dean Sicking, an engineer at the University of Birmingham who helped develop an early version of the Trinity ET Guardrail, says the safety tests currently underway in San Antonio are not being performed at the low-impact levels most real-world crashes occur at.

“They’re not testing the impact conditions that are generating the problems and producing injuries and fatalities that we’re seeing on highways,” Sicking said. “What I would like to see happen is enough testing be done at the critical impact angle.”

Whistleblower Joshua Harman says the modified ET Plus guardrail has not performed well in dozens of accidents around the country. In 2005, Trinity changed the width of part of the guardrail from 5 inches to 4 without informing federal and state transportation officials.

In Oct. 2014, Harman sued Trinity for fraud and a Texas jury ruled in his favor. After the verdict, Trinity agreed to have its guardrails independently tested by the Southwest Research Center in San Antonio.
