What’s the Problem?

The study, titled “In-Service Evaluation of FHWA-Accepted Guardrail Terminals,” looked at highway guardrail accidents in Ohio and Missouri. Specifically, researchers assessed crash performance of Trinity Industries’ ET-2000 guardrail system against the following designs:

  • Flared Energy Absorbing Terminal (FLEAT) and the Sequential Kinking Terminal (SKT), both made by Road Systems, Inc., in which the guardrail is forced through the head and kinked to dissipate energy.
  • Slotted Rail Terminal (SRT), manufactured by Trinity, features slots in the rail that reduce stiffness in the event of a head-on collision.
  • The Trinity ET-Plus, which thrusts the guardrail into a flat metal ribbon.

“To date… in both states, it was found that the ET-Plus placed motorists at a higher level of risk of both serious and fatal injuries relative to its predecessor, the ET-2000,” reads the report. “The overall trend for [both] states included in the analysis shows that the ET-Plus is 1.45 times more likely to be involved in a severe injury than the ET-2000. More poignantly however, the ET-Plus is 3.95 times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash than the ET-2000.”

The ET-Plus guardrail system, produced by Trinity in 2005, was the subject of a recent investigation that looked into allegations that the devices can malfunction when struck by oncoming traffic. Rather than ribboning out and absorbing the impact as designed, the guardrails locked up and impaled vehicles, severing motorists’ limbs in some cases.
