Medical Product Safety Alert: Triad Alcohol Prep Pads, Alcohol Swabs, and Alcohol Swabsticks recalled due to potential microbial contamination. Use of contaminated products could lead to life-threatening infections.
What’s the problem?
January 21, 2011 – Triad Group announced today a recall involving all lots of its alcohol prep pads, alcohol swabs, and alcohol swabsticks sold as private labels at the consumer level. These products are used to disinfect prior to an injection.
They were distributed nationwide to retail pharmacies, are packaged in individual packets, and sold in retail pharmacies in a box of 100 packets. The affected Alcohol Prep Pads, Alcohol Swabs and Alcohol Swabsticks can be identified by either “Triad Group,” listed as the manufacturer, or the products are manufactured for a third party and use the names listed below in their packaging:
- Cardinal Health
- PSS Select
- Boca/ Ultilet
- Moore Medical
This recall was initiated over concerns about potential contamination of the products in question with Bacillus cereus. This recall involves those products marked as STERILE as well as non-sterile products. Use of contaminated alcohol prep pads, alcohol swabs, and alcohol swabsticks could lead to life-threatening infections, especially in at-risk populations including infants, the elderly, and those with suppressed immune systems.
Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) is a type of bacteria that produces toxins that can cause two types of illness: one characterized by diarrhea and the other, called emetic, by nausea and vomiting. Duration of the illness typically lasts 24 hours or more; call your healthcare provider if you cannot drink enough fluids to prevent dehydration.
