What’s the Problem?

According to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), this recall affects the following Thor motorhomes built on DTNA chassis:

  • 2019-2020 Thor Aria 3401
  • 2019-2020 Thor Aria 3601
  • 2019-2020 Thor Aria 3901
  • 2019-2020 Thor Aria 3902
  • 2019-2020 Thor Venetian G36
  • 2019-2020 Thor Venetian J40
  • 2019-2020 Thor Venetian L40
  • 2019-2020 Thor Venetian M37
  • 2019-2020 Thor Venetian R40
  • 2019-2020 Thor Venetian S40

The brake caliper mounting bolts on affected Thor RVs may have been insufficiently tightened, NHTSA said. Loose brake caliper mounting bolts can reduce brake effectiveness, increasing the risk of a crash.

Thor Motor Coach is contacting owners and dealers will inspect and repair the motorhomes, free of charge. This recall began on May 19, 2020.

Virginia Man Sues Thor Motor Coach Over Defective Motorhome

In March 2020, a man from Virginia filed a lawsuit against Thor Motor Coach, Inc., over the purchase of an allegedly defective motorhome. The Plaintiff, Michael Waterman, purchased a new 2019 Thor Aria motorhome from Camping World RV Sales of Fredericksburg, Virginia on June 18, 2018.

Waterman purchased the Motorhome with a factory warranty which provided a 1-year, 15,000-mile basic express warranty and a 2-year, 24,000-mile structure warranty. The Limited Warranty covered “any repairs or replacements needed during the warranty period and/or due to defects in factory materials or workmanship,” according to the lawsuit.

Shortly after he bought the motorhome, Waterman asserts problems stemming from the various defects with the Motorhome began to appear. The problems included:

  • Mechanical issues related to the chassis
  • Impaired tail lights
  • Faulty air conditioning
  • Discoloration of the interior trim
  • Water leaks

As a result of these problems, Waterman returned the motorhome to a Camping World dealership for inspection and repairs no fewer than 3 times. Waterman asserts that, notwithstanding these attempted repairs, the Motorhome has never been brought into conformity with the Warranty and is substantially impaired in its use, value, and safety. According to Waterman, the alleged defects caused the Motorhome to be out-of-service for several months, “far in excess of 30 days.”

The lawsuit is MICHAEL WATERMAN, Plaintiff, v. THOR MOTOR COACH, INC. AND FREIGHTLINER CUSTON CHASSIS CORPORATION. Civil Action No. 3:19-cv-890.
