Testosterone Venous Thromboembolism Lawsuit

Testosterone replacement therapy supplements have recently been linked to a severe cardiovascular side effect called venous thromboembolism.

Testosterone replacement therapy supplements have recently been linked to a severe cardiovascular side effect called venous thromboembolism (VTE). This condition occurs when a blood clot that forms in one of the body’s deep veins travels through the bloodstream and becomes stuck in the lungs, resulting in a pulmonary embolism. Signs and symptoms of a VTE include pain, warmth, swelling, and discoloration of the affected extremity.

What is a Venous Thromboembolism?

A venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a condition that includes both deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT is characterized by the development of a blood clot in one of the body’s deep veins, typically in the arms or legs. A severe complication of deep vein thrombosis is when the clot dislodges and migrates to the lungs, where it becomes a pulmonary embolism. Unfortunately, venous thromboembolism is a common occurrence and it can be fatal. Lower-extremity DVT has a 3% PE-related mortality rate. Patients with a pulmonary embolism have a 30 to 60% to chance of dying from it.

VTE Symptoms

Symptoms of a thrombosis may include:

  • Pain
  • Swelling
  • Warmth
  • Discoloration of the affected extremity
  • Calf tenderness
  • Unilateral oedema
  • Superficial venous dilation

FDA Warning: Testosterone Use Linked to VTE

In June 2014, the FDA issued a press release which stated that all prescription testosterone boosters will have their warning labels updated to include information about the risk of venous blood clots. According to the announcement:

“FDA is requiring a change to drug labeling of all testosterone products to provide a more general warning regarding venous blood clots and to ensure this risk is described consistently in the labeling of all approved testosterone products… Because these clots occur in the veins, this new warning is not related to FDA’s ongoing evaluation of the possible risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in patients taking testosterone products.”

Can I File a Testosterone Venous Thromboembolism Lawsuit?

Most cases involving pharmaceuticals allege that a drug was sold with design, manufacturing, and/or marketing defects, which typically refers to a company’s failure to warn of a certain side effect. In the case of testosterone supplements, our attorneys suspect that patients may be able to take legal action in light of claims that manufacturers failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of venous thromboembolism.

How Can Filing a Lawsuit Help Me?

By filing a lawsuit against the maker of a testosterone replacement therapy product, you may be entitled to collect compensation for all current and future medical expenses related to the treatment of your venous thromboembolism, as well as for damages for pain and suffering. Additionally, filing a lawsuit can help hold the drug’s manufacturer accountable for releasing an allegedly defective drug into the marketplace, and to discourage other pharmaceutical companies from engaging in similar conduct.
