According to a recent study, testosterone supplements can cause pulmonary embolisms in middle aged and older men. This condition is caused by the sudden blockage of a major blood vessel (artery) in the lungs. Testosterone pulmonary embolisms can be fatal if they are not treated in a timely manner.

JAMA Study Links Testosterone to Pulmonary Embolism, Cardiovascular Side Effects
The study, which was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in November 2013, determined that testosterone replacement therapies (TRT) can cause men to suffer pulmonary embolisms and other severe health consequences. Researchers found that men with a history of heart disease were 30% more likely to suffer a stroke, heart attack or die compared to healthy men who did not use testosterone. The JAMA study is the second major study that has reported an increased risk associated with testosterone boosters.
What is Testosterone Replacement Therapy (TRT)?
Testosterone supplements are only approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to treat men who have been diagnosed with low testosterone blood levels. But now, because of aggressive marketing campaigns, many doctors are prescribing testosterone replacement products to men to combat declining levels of testosterone that are a natural part of aging. TRT allegedly improves sex drive, strengthens bone density, and builds muscle mass. This ‘off label’ use of testosterone is becoming more and more prevalent, and is not subject to FDA review.
TRT products include:
Risks of Unnecessary TRT Therapy Include Pulmonary Embolism
Testosterone is a sex hormone that the human body produces naturally. Men receiving unnecessary TRT treatments may be exposed to potentially severe cardiovascular and metabolic complications, including pulmonary embolism. This condition is characterized by a sudden blockage of a major blood vessel (artery) in the lung. In most cases, the blood clots are small and not life-threatening, but they can cause damage to the lung. However, if the clot is large and stops blood flow to the lungs, it can be fatal. Prompt medical treatment is critical, and can reduce the risk of future problems.
Testosterone Pulmonary Embolism Symptoms
- Sudden shortness of breath
- Sharp chest pain that gets worse when coughing or taking a deep breath
- Cough that produces pink, foamy mucus
- Anxious feeling
- Excessive sweating
- Heart palpitations
In the vast majority of cases, testosterone pulmonary embolisms occur when a blood clot in the leg breaks loose and migrates to the lungs. A clot in a vein close to the skin is unlikely to cause major problems. But having blood clots in deep veins, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), can cause pulmonary embolisms. Approximately 300,000 people suffer pulmonary embolisms each year in the United States.
