First-Time Testosterone Users Face Increased Risk of Heart Attack: Study

A new study has found that certain men who use prescription testosterone boosters may have an increased risk of suffering a heart attack.

A new study has found that certain men who use prescription testosterone boosters may have an increased risk of suffering a life-threatening heart attack compared to men who do not take the supplements. The study confirms previous research linking testosterone treatments to severe, potentially fatal cardiovascular side effects.

What’s the Problem?

The study, which was published in the journal Pharmacotherapy on Jan. 13, 2015, examined data on nearly 1 million men between the ages of 45 and 80. The study’s authors determined that first-time testosterone users were 41% more likely to have a myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack, compared to non-users. While the researchers noted that the absolute risk was low, they did characterize the risk among first-time users as “statistically significant.” The study is the latest in a growing body of scientific research to identify severe cardiovascular risks associated with prescription testosterone use in specific patient populations.

Testosterone Studies

In November of 2013, a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that older men, as well as younger ones with a pre-existing history of heart problems, had an increased risk of cardiovascular health complications following the use of TRT. That study was followed 2 months later by another in PLOS ONE which found that Low T boosters may double the risk of heart attack in young men with prior heart problems, as well as in men over 65 with no pre-existing heart problems. After reviewing these studies, the FDA launched an investigation into the safety of testosterone supplements.
