What’s the Problem?

May 5, 2016 – The study, which was published in Scientific Reports, set out to find the reason for an increased risk of heart attack in men who use testosterone supplements. The researchers examined how testosterone affected blood vessel tissues in laboratory mice, finding that it may be the reason for calcium buildup inside the vessels. The calcification was specifically linked to testosterone since the researchers determined that removing the androgen receptors caused less calcium production.

Calcification leads to narrowing and hardening of the blood vessel, which makes the heart work harder to perform its duties. It can also cause problems with the heart valves. These issues can increase the risk of heart attack and other cardiovascular complications, according to the study.

The researchers noted that their findings were derived from a relatively small sample group and that additional research is needed to determine a conclusive link between testosterone, calcification and heart attack. However, their findings support previous studies which have associated the use of testosterone boosters with increased rates of heart attack. Testosterone supplements, which were originally approved for the treatment of low testosterone (“Low T”) levels due to hypogonadism, have recently been prescribed “off-label” for a variety of other reasons, including the natural aging process.

Testosterone Litigation Status

Federal lawsuits involving injuries allegedly caused by AndroGel, Testim and Axiron have now been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation (MDL) in U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. MDLs are commonly established when there is a large number of cases with common statements of fact for the purpose of streamlining early trial proceedings.
