The use of testosterone replacement therapy supplements has been linked to a cardiovascular side effect called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). This condition occurs when blood clots develop in the deep veins of the leg. When these clots break away and travel through the bloodstream, they can become trapped in the lungs, resulting in a life-threatening pulmonary embolism.

Testosterone Supplements & Deep Vein Thrombosis
Testosterone boosters such as AndroGel, Axiron and Bio-T-Gel have recently been found to increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis, or blood clots in the legs. The problem is that synthetic testosterone can increase the red blood cell count in the body (a condition known as polycythemia), thickening the blood, raising blood pressure and creating an imbalance in estrogen levels — all of which are documented risk factors for blood clots.
FDA Warning: Testosterone May Increase Risk of DVT
On June 19, 2014, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration issued a warning which stated that all prescription testosterone products will have their labeling updated to include information about the risk of deep vein thrombosis. Prior to this announcement, only testosterone gel formulations carried verbiage regarding the DVT risk.
“FDA is requiring a change to drug labeling of all testosterone products to provide a more general warning regarding venous blood clots and to ensure this risk is described consistently in the labeling of all approved testosterone products,” the warning states. “Because these clots occur in the veins, this new warning is not related to FDA’s ongoing evaluation of the possible risk of stroke, heart attack, and death in patients taking testosterone products.”
What is a Deep Vein Thrombosis?
DVTs occur when a blood clot develops inside one of the body’s deep veins (typically in the lower leg or thigh). These clots become dangerous when they break away and travel through the blood. Once a clot breaks free from the implant site, it is called an embolus. It can then become trapped in the lungs and inhibit blood flow, resulting in a potentially fatal pulmonary embolism.

Can I File a Testosterone Deep Vein Thrombosis Lawsuit?

Most cases involving pharmaceuticals allege that a drug was sold with design, manufacturing, and/or marketing defects, which typically refers to a company’s failure to warn of a certain side effect. In the case of testosterone supplements, our attorneys suspect that patients may be able to take legal action in light of claims that manufacturers failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
How Can Filing a Lawsuit Help Me?
By filing a lawsuit against the maker of a testosterone replacement therapy product, you may be entitled to collect compensation for all current and future medical expenses related to the treatment of your deep vein thrombosis, as well as for damages for pain and suffering. Additionally, filing a lawsuit can help hold the drug’s manufacturer accountable for releasing an allegedly defective drug into the marketplace, and to discourage other pharmaceutical companies from engaging in similar conduct.
