Recent Studies Demonstrate Testosterone Stroke Risk
In 2014, a study performed by researchers at UCLA and the National Cancer Institute (NCI) identified a 2-fold increased risk of heart attack in men aged 65 years or older in the three months after beginning treatment. The same study also found serious risks for younger men with a history of heart disease. That group had a 2-to-3-fold increased risk of heart attack in the three months following their 1st prescription.
A November 2013 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), which was performed on older men in the Veterans Affairs (VA) health system, identified a nearly 30% increased risk of stroke, heart attack and death in the group treated with testosterone supplements.
FDA Warning on Testopel
In response to the studies cited above, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in January 2014 that it had kicked off an investigation into the safety of testosterone boosters like Testopel. The agency issued a medical safety alert warning men of the potentials risks of testosterone supplementation. In the alert, FDA advised prescribing physicians to “consider whether the benefits of FDA-approved testosterone treatment are likely to exceed the potential risks of treatment.”
Warning Signs of a Stroke
If you used Testopel and think you may be having a stroke, act FAST and call 9-1-1 immediately. Use the acronym FAST to remember the warning signs of a Testopel stroke:
F: Face – Ask the person to smile. Is one side of their face drooping?
A: Arms – Ask the person to life both arms. Does one arm drift downwards?
S: Speech – Ask the person to repeat an easy sentence. Is their speech slurred or strange sounding?
T: Time – If you notice any of the symptoms, call 9-1-1 right away.
Time is of the essence when it comes to stroke treatment. If the patient is able to receive treatment within three hours of exhibiting the initial symptoms, there is an FDA-approved clot-buster drug that may reduce long-term disability for the most strokes. There are also a number of stroke treatments available that may help reduce the effects of a stroke.
