Recent studies have found that men who use testosterone boosters like Testim are more likely to suffer a stroke or die compared to non-users. Research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) in November 2013 followed 8,700 men with low testosterone (“Low T”) for a period of three years. The study determined that those who took testosterone increased their risk of stroke, heart attack and death by up to 30%.

What’s the Problem With Testosterone Therapy?
Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) has become big business in the United States over the past several years. The number of middle-aged and older men treated for Low T has more than tripled over the past decade. As a result, sales of testosterone supplements like Testim have skyrocketed despite the long-term side effects being largely unknown to the medical community. Pharmaceutical manufacturers may be exposing men to serious health risks without providing any real benefit, despite promising products that will help improve sex drive, bone density and muscle mass.
Testim Stroke Risk
A growing body within the medical community is becoming concerned that testosterone supplements like Testim are being widely overprescribed, which may increase the risk of stroke and other serious side effects in some patients. A stroke occurs when a blood clot or damaged blood vessel inhibits the flow of oxygenated (red) blood to the brain. This can cause severe damage or death to brain cells, which can result in loss of mental ability, bodily function, or even death.
Signs and symptoms of a Testim stroke may include:
- Painful headache
- Acute numbness in the face
- Weakness in an arm or leg
- Vision problems
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding
- Disorientation, dizziness or balance problems
Testosterone Medical Studies
In November 2013, the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) warned that testosterone users aged 65 years or older, as well as younger men with a history of heart disease, had a nearly 30% increased rate of stroke, heart attack or death. This research was based on a study of more than 8,000 patients in the Veterans Affairs (VA) health system. In 2009, a government-funded study intended to identify the advantages of testosterone gels on older men’s health was stopped prematurely due to the number of serious injuries like stroke.
Side Effects of Testim
In addition to having the potential to cause a stroke, Testim has also been linked to the following serious side effects:
- Heart attack
- Blood clot
- Pulmonary embolism
- Transient ischemic attacks (“mini-stroke”)
- Sudden death
Other, less severe side effects of Testim may include:
- Hair loss
- Trouble sleeping
- Change in sexual desire
- Redness/swelling of the skin
- Change in skin color
