Testim Lawsuit Maryland

A product liability lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a Maryland man who allegedly suffered a heart attack and stroke after using Testim, a testosterone replacement therapy supplement.

A product liability lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a Maryland man who allegedly suffered a heart attack and stroke after using Testim, a testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) supplement. The lawsuit alleges that Auxilium Pharmaceuticals, the company that makes Testim, misrepresented the product as being safe and effective for treating low testosterone (‘Low T’), when in fact it causes severe cardiovascular problems.

What’s the Problem?

According to the lawsuit, the 62-year-old Maryland resident took Testim from August 2012 to July 2013. He allegedly had a stroke on or about April 2013, and then a heart attack in July 2013. The complaints alleges both injuries were caused by his use of Testim.

The lawsuit accuses Auxilium Pharmaceuticals of aggressively advertising Testim, yet failing to adequately warn the public and medical communities about the potential health risks associated with testosterone supplementation, which have been reported to include heart attack, stroke, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and sudden death. As stated in the New York Times, men who take use testosterone supplements “have been found to have higher rates of heart problems in some studies.” The lawsuit was filed on Jan. 19 in the U.S. District Court, District of Northern Illinois (1:15-cv-00494).

FDA Investigating Heart, Stroke Risk in Testosterone Users

In Jan. 2014, the FDA launched an investigation into the potential cardiovascular risks posed by testosterone therapy drugs. The agency kicked off the investigation after reviewing a study published in PLOS ONE, as well as another featured in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA). FDA advised that while patients should not stop testosterone without consulting their physicians, healthcare professionals should consider whether benefits of the drugs outweigh the risks.
