Why are Testosterone Users Filing Lawsuits?
The companies who make testosterone boosters like Testim have spent hundreds of millions of dollars advertising directly to middle-aged and older American men. AndroGel, the testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) drug that currently dominates the U.S. market, even outsold Viagra in 2013. However, these drugmakers have failed to warn consumers that TRT products have been linked to an increased risk of heart attack, stroke, and death. At Schmidt & Clark, LLP, we believe that drugmakers have an ethical duty to provide consumers with adequate warnings about the potential health risks associated with their products. Testim’s packaging does not indicate that use of the drug may cause cardiovascular problems.
Studies Highlight Heart Attack Risk Posed by Testim
A recent study published in the January 29, 2014 online edition of the medical journal PLOS ONE determined that certain men have an increased risk of having a heart attack while undergoing treatment with testosterone supplements like Testim. The study, which included about 56,000 test subjects, found that men aged 65 years or older, as well as younger men with a pre-existing history of heart disease, had twice the rate of heart attack in the 90 days after starting a regimen of testosterone compared to the year prior to beginning treatment. Additionally, the PLOS ONE study addressed the question of whether these men were at a greater risk for cardiac complications due to an increase in libido caused by elevated testosterone levels. When researchers compared these men side-by-side with a separate group taking Viagra and Cialis, the men on the erectile dysfunction (ED) medications did not have more heart attacks.
What is a Heart Attack?
A heart attack (myocardial infarction, or MI) is characterized by permanent damage to the heart muscle. “Myo” means muscle, “cardial” refers to the heart, and “infarction” means death of tissue caused by a lack of blood flow. Heart attacks occur when a coronary artery becomes obstructed, prohibiting the flow of blood to the heart muscle, thus damaging it irreparably.
Signs and symptoms of a Testim heart attack may include:
- Angina – Chest pain or discomfort in the center of the chest
- Pain or discomfort in the arms, left shoulder, back, neck, jaw, or stomach
- Difficulty breathing / shortness of breath
- Sweating or “cold sweats”
- Fullness, indigestion, or choking sensation
- Rapid or irregular heart beats
