Salmonella Food Poisoning Information

Salmonella food poisoning (salmonellosis) can cause severe illnesses including fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. There are approximately 30,000 confirmed cases of salmonellosis each year nationwide, although the actual number is estimated to be much higher.

While most individuals recover from salmonella food poisoning without medical intervention, the infection can be life-threatening to young children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems. Consumers with any of these symptoms should call their physician. Click here [2] to learn more about salmonella infection.

Iced Tea Safety

In 1996, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) put out a “Memo on Bacterial Contamination of Iced Tea” in order to provide information on iced tea safety in response to health department requests for guidelines on preparing and storing the product.

The CDC summarized its findings with the following points:

1. Tea is a beverage with little history of disease transmission. At present, no outbreaks of infection have been reported that have been positively linked to tea consumption.

2. Tea leaves may be tainted with coliform bacteria. If iced tea is brewed at too cool a temperature or in a dirty container, or if it is stored for too long, it may grow coliform bacteria and E. coli.

3. Food handling errors that lead to the introduction of microbial pathogens in brewed tea could result in human disease.

4. Brewing iced tea at an appropriate temperature in a clean container and limiting the time held at room temperature before serving will minimize the risk of bacterial contamination.
