Salmonella Food Poisoning

Salmonella food poisoning is one of the most commonly reported foodborne illnesses reported in the United States, sickening some 40,000 people each year (though the actual number is likely to be far higher, as the majority who contract the sickness never report it to authorities). While there are more than 2,300 types salmonella bacteria, Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium are responsible for approximately 50 percent of all cases of salmonella poisoning. Signs and symptoms include (but are not limited to):

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal pain
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Muscle pains
  • Blood in the stool

Factors that may increase your risk of salmonella poisoning include activities that may bring you into closer contact with salmonella bacteria and health problems that may weaken your resistance to infection in general. Those at highest risk include young children, frail or elderly people, and those with compromised immune systems. Click here to learn more about salmonella infection from the Mayo Clinic.
