What’s the problem?
June 6, 2017 – The litigation, In Re: Taxotere (Docetaxel) Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2740, US District Court, Eastern District of Louisiana, concerns the allegations of hundreds of cancer patients who claim they lost hair that never grew back following chemo with docetaxel.
While temporary hair loss is a common side effect of cancer treatment drugs, this complication is often permanent and irreversible with Taxotere, according to the lawsuits.
Approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 1996, Taxotere is administered intravenously and used to treat breast cancer, non-small lung cancer and prostate cancer. The medicine’s labeling warns of several potential side effects including low blood cell count, allergic reactions, fluid retention, gastrointestinal problems and hair loss.
The Taxotere prescribing information currently states that “In most cases normal hair growth should return,” but also that “In some cases (frequency not known) permanent hair loss has been observed.”
There are now at least 1,116 Taxotere lawsuits pending in the Eastern District of Louisiana, according to a joint report submitted May 12. The report also indicated that at least 3 defendants have been dismissed from liability in the lawsuits.
One of the companies, Apotex Inc., submitted proof that it had never manufactured docetaxel. The others, Northstar RX LLC and Eagle Pharmaceuticals, proved that they didn’t make docetaxel until after the injuries alleged by individual complainants.
The next status conference in the Taxotere litigation is set for July 7, 2017.
