Cancer Survivor Alleges Permanent Alopecia from Taxotere

A cancer survivor explains how she lost hair and never grew it back after undergoing chemotherapy with Taxotere.

As part of her breast cancer treatment regimen, Lynett agreed to undergo chemotherapy with Taxotere (generic: docetaxel). Five years later and she is remission; however, her hair never grew back.

What’s the Problem?

April 27, 2016 – After undergoing breast reconstruction surgery following a total mastectomy, Lynett was sent to an oncologist. He told her that she would need chemotherapy “to increase my chances of living and the cancer not returning,” and that “my hair would grow back immediately upon termination of the IV chemotherapy treatment, which was taxotere – I asked my doctor before filing a complaint,” Lynett said.

By her 3rd treatment, Lynett’s hair began to fall out, and she was completely bald by the 5th session.

“I felt very ashamed,” Lynett said. “It was very embarrassing not to have one hair on my head so I bought a wig. I figured, if I could just get through this year of chemo, my hair will come back…”

Unfortunately, Lynett responded poorly to chemo. In addition to experiencing hair loss, she felt sick constantly and was often too weak to move. By the time she began to recover from a treatment, it was time for another round.

Once her chemotherapy was complete, Lynett went back to her oncologist, who reassured her that the hair loss was only temporary. However, it’s been 5 years and her hair still hasn’t grown back.

“I used to have a full, thick head of hair that I wore past my shoulders,” Lynett said. “I always thought it would grow back, but five years later, I had my doubts. Then I saw a TV commercial about Taxotere side effects and it clicked. Why wasn’t I offered an alternative treatment?”

Taxotere lawsuits claim that drugmaker Sanofi failed to adequately warn doctors and patients that the medication could cause permanent hair loss, or alopecia. Complaints also allege that the company hid studies linking Taxotere to toxic side effects.
