What’s the Problem?
This recall affects Target Room Essentials Shower Stools, item number 064-20-1091, according to the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) [1].
“The shower stools can become unstable or slippery while in use, causing the stools to tip over, posing a fall hazard,” CPSC said. “Target has received 12 reports of consumers falling off the recalled shower stools, including four reports of bruises, bumps and scratches, and one report of an arm sprain.”
The shower stools are white and measure 18 inches tall and have a 3-legged aluminum frame and a plastic curved seat. The “Room Essentials” logo and item number 064-20-1091 are printed on the front of the product’s hangtag.
The recalled shower chairs were sold online and at Target stores nationwide from March 2019 through September 2020 for about $35.
If you purchased a shower chair that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it and return it to any Target store for a full refund.
This recall began on May 26, 2021.
How to Choose the Best Shower Chair
There are a few things to consider before purchasing a shower chair:
Height – Some shower chairs come at a set height, while others have adjustable legs. Look for the chair that offers you enough height to sit and stand comfortably.
Weight limit – Most shower seats hold up to around 250 pounds. If you need something to accommodate additional girth, check the specs before buying.
Size – Not all shower chairs are the same size. Measure the width of your shower prior to purchasing and select one that will fit properly. If you have a shower with a door, measure the door to make sure the chair will fit through.
Purpose – Determine whether you need help getting in the shower or whether you just need a safe place to sit and rest. Shower chairs can tip if you sit down on them improperly, so they’ll work best when you’re able to walk in and sit down on your own.
