The jury concluded that talc contained in Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower-to-Shower contributed to Plaintiff Donna Olson’s development of mesothelioma, a deadly type of cancer that begins in the lining of the lungs, heart, and other organs. Talcum powder has also recently been linked to numerous cases of ovarian cancer, which J&J is currently fighting hundreds of additional lawsuits over.

What’s the problem?
Plaintiff Olson, who brought the suit in Oct. 2017, alleged that her near daily use of J&J’s talcum powder from 1953 thru 2015 caused her to develop mesothelioma, according to Law360.
Earlier this month, J&J motioned for the testimony of Olson’s microscopy expert, who has testified for plaintiffs in many talc cancer trials, to be thrown out based on false data.
“This trial suffered significant legal and evidentiary errors — one of the most egregious being the demonstrably false testimony from the plaintiff’s central expert, which prompted us to move for mistrial,” a J&J spokesperson said upon news of the verdict.
The lawsuit is: Donna A. Olson et al. v. Brenntag North America Inc. et al., case number 190328/2017, in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, County of New York.
There are still more than 14,000 lawsuits pending in courts across the U.S. alleging that talc-containing products caused ovarian cancer or mesothelioma. Most of the complaints allege that the talc J&J used in its consumer healthcare products was contaminated with asbestos, a known carcinogen (cancer-causing substance).
