A Bailey County, TX farmer has filed a lawsuit against Syngenta AG alleging that the company not only made it impossible for him to sell his corn on the international market, but also that it caused catastrophic financial losses to all U.S. corn farmers. Syngenta currently faces more than 160 such lawsuits filed on behalf of farmers and commodity traders who claim their businesses were harmed when China rejected U.S. corn shipments that contained the company’s genetically-modified Viptera seed.

Update: Kansas Corn Farmers Awarded $218 Million in Syngenta Lawsuit
June 26, 2017 – A federal jury has awarded nearly $218 million to Kansas farmers who sued Syngenta AG over its introduction of a genetically engineered corn seed variety. Plaintiffs alleged that they suffered economic damages when Syngenta introduced Agrisure Viptera and Agrisure Duracade to the U.S. market prior to China approving the strains.
What’s the Problem?
January 20, 2015 – Plaintiff Jerry Don Glover said in a lawsuit filed last week that Syngenta released and distributed MIR162, a genetically-modified corn seed known as Viptera, without it being approved by China — one of the largest purchasers of U.S. corn.
“Glover believed that growing Viptera and Duracade was commonplace and that their ability to sell such corn would not be impacted,” the lawsuit said.
However, China did not approve MIR162 corn seed until Dec. 2014, which Glover claims destroyed the U.S. corn market and depressed prices for all domestic corn. The lawsuit also alleges that Viptera corn seed contaminated other varieties of corn across the country through cross-pollination, and that Syngenta continues to make things worse for American farmers.
“Even with China’s approval stalled, Syngenta still encourages farmers to grow Viptera and Duracade corn, while downplaying and misrepresenting the risks of the foreclosure of the Chinese market, through the advertisements and public statements…” the lawsuit said.
