Stryker Corp. in 2013 issued a recall for its ShapeMatch Cutting Guides, which are used exclusively with the Stryker Triathlon Knee System. Complications associated with this knee implant include joint instability or looseness, fracture, chronic pain, limited mobility, and the need for revision surgery.

What is the Stryker Triathlon Knee?
The Stryker Triathlon Knee System was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2005. Unlike older knee implants, which use a single hinge, the Triathlon knee pivots in a way that maintains a “single radius” design, more similar to a circle.
In April 2013, Stryker issued a Class I Recall for its ShapeMatch Cutting Guides after it was found that a software defect caused incorrect cutting ranges which could result in knee replacement complications. At the time of the recall, Stryker had received at least 44 reports of incidents and injuries (41 “malfunctions” and 3 “temporary” reversible injuries) associated with the ShapeMatch Cutting Guide, which was only used with the Triathlon knee implant.
