Doctors Warn Testosterone Boosters Linked to Blood Clot, Cardiovascular Side Effects
Testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) may help improve a man’s sex life, but it can also cause blindness or even sudden death due to blood clots. These complications can arise in as little as one month after initiating treatment, according to a recent study conducted by Dr. Charles Glueck at the Jewish Hospital Cholesterol and Metabolism Center in Cincinnati, OH.
“Our research found that 1.2% of men who landed in the hospital with dangerous and potentially lethal blood clots in the deep veins of the legs or in the lungs developed these clots within three months of starting testosterone therapy,” Glueck said. “Not one of these men knew previously that they had an inherited clotting disorder that put them at greater risk for developing clots, nor did their providers test them before putting them on testosterone therapy.”
As men get older, their testosterone levels tend to decrease slowly (usually around 1% per year after the age of 30), and more men are turning to testosterone boosters like Striant in hopes of regaining their youthful energy and vigor. Natural testosterone plays a fundamental role in a man’s sex drive, and helps build muscle mass, red blood cell production, fat distribution and bone density.
Attempting to determine the frequency of blood clots caused by testosterone supplements, Glueck and his research team investigated almost 600 test subjects who had been hospitalized over the course of three years. The researchers identified 18 cases in men and 4 in women of blood clots in the lungs, or blood clots in the bones after patients initiated treatment with testosterone. All of the test subjects had a previously undiagnosed inherited risk for blood clots.
