What’s the Problem?
This recall affects about 3,600 Stelpro ASSO and ASSOS Sonoma wall fan heaters, according to the CPSC Recall Notice [1].
Affected wall fan heaters are white, with the word “Stelpro” printed on the front. Only heaters with version or production code 47-19 or prior are affected by the recall, CPSC said.
The heaters were sold at electrical distributors nationwide from March 2018 through December 2019 for between $140 to $370.
If you purchased a wall fan heater that is affected by this recall, you should stop using it immediately and contact Stelpro Design Inc. for information about how to receive a replacement heater. This recall began on April 2, 2020.
How Wall Fans Cause House Fires
Wall fans typically cause fires in the summer months, when people tend to use them more often. Fans blow air around the room, which can be enough to start a fire if it’s hot enough.
According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), accidental fan-related house fires are most common between June and September, when rooms are hotter and fans are in use more often. Additionally, how owners operate fans can increase the risk of a fire, and even experts from Electrical Safety First recommend being cautious with the wires, plugs, and sounds of such devices, as these things could also pose a risk. Don’t forget to always plug in and unplug fans with care.
Fans can be useful for reducing the risk of home fires, but that doesn’t mean you should use them all the time. If you have a ceiling fan, you should check it regularly for rusting or loose connections, and make sure to clean it periodically.
Don’t use fans in rooms where smoking takes place because smoke can build up on the blades and cause a fire. Also, don’t place anything flammable near your fan blades, because it could ignite if it gets too close to the blades.
