March 1, 2012 – The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) issued a press release today informing healthcare professionals of updates to the prescribing information concerning adverse interactions between protease inhibitors and certain statin medications. When these two types of drugs are taken together, they may raise the blood levels of statins and increase the risk of a severe muscle injury known as myopathy. Even when taken alone, statin drugs like Zocor, Crestor, Lipitor, Simcor and Vytorin may cause rhabdomyolysis, kidney failure, type 2 diabetes, and even death.

What’s the problem?
The statin drugs that have the potential to interact with protease inhibitors belong to a class of prescription medications that are designed to reduce levels of ‘bad’ cholesterol (low-density lipoprotein, or LDL) and triglycerides in the blood, while simultaneously increasing levels of ‘good’ cholesterol (high-density lipoprotein, or HDL). Lowering cholesterol levels can help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and vascular disease. The following statin drugs may cause severe muscle damage when taken in combination with protease inhibitors:
HIV protease inhibitors belong to a class of FDA-approved anti-viral medications that are designed to treat the human immunodeficiency virus. HCV protease inhibitors are a class of anti-viral drugs prescribed to treat hepatitis C infection.
The FDA is advising healthcare professionals to follow the recommendations in the prescribing information (drug labels) when prescribing HIV or HCV protease inhibitors with statin drugs. Patients taking these medications together should consult their physicians immediately if they begin experiencing any unusual symptoms.
Statin Drug Side Effects
Cholesterol-lowering medications from the statin class have been linked to the following serious side effects:
- muscle damage
- kidney damage
- kidney failure (also known as renal failure)
