Listeria Food Poisoning (Listeriosis)
Listeriosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, and those with otherwise weakened immune systems. Signs and symptoms of listeria food poisoning include:
- fever
- muscle aches
- nausea
- diarrhea
If listeriosis spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include:
- headache
- stiff neck
- confusion
- loss of balance
- convulsions
Despite the fact that outbreaks of listeriosis are relatively rare in the United States, listeria food poisoning remains a significant public health threat. Public health officials estimate that upwards of 2,500 cases of listeriosis - approximately 500 of which will result in death - occur each and every year nationwide. Expecting mothers are nearly 20 times more likely to contract the disease than the general public, a statistic made even more frightening by the fact that the infection has been known to travel into the fetus through the umbilical cord.
