Spartan Stores is now recalling a variety of egg salad and egg sandwich products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes, a potentially-deadly foodborne pathogen. This action was taken in response to a nationwide recall initiated last week by egg producer Michaels Foods. Consumers in possession of any Spartan Stores egg products included in this recall should discard them immediately or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.

Listeria Food Poisoning (Listeriosis)
Listeriosis is a serious and potentially life-threatening infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. It primarily affects pregnant women, newborns, and those with otherwise weakened immune systems. Signs and symptoms of listeria food poisoning include:
- muscle aches
If listeriosis spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include:
- stiff neck
- loss of balance
Despite the fact that outbreaks of listeriosis are relatively rare in the United States, listeria food poisoning remains a significant public health threat. Public health officials estimate that upwards of 2,500 cases of listeriosis – approximately 500 of which will result in death – occur each and every year nationwide. Expecting mothers are nearly 20 times more likely to contract the disease than the general public, a statistic made even more frightening by the fact that the infection has been known to travel into the fetus through the umbilical cord.
