What’s the Problem?
March 9, 2017 – The two children confirmed with E. coli in Oregon are siblings, both under the age of 18. They were not hospitalized, did not develop hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and are currently recovering, according to state health officials.
In addition to the 2 cases in Oregon, there have been E. coli infections linked to soy nut butter produced by the SoyNut Butter Co. in the following states:
- Arizona (4 cases)
- California (4 cases)
- Maryland (1 case)
- Missouri (1 case)
- New Jersey (1 case)
- Virginia (1 case)
- Washington (1 case)
- Wisconsin (1 case)
People who may have become sick after Feb. 13 are not likely to be included in these statistics due to the 2 to 3 week lag time between lab work and cases being entered into the database, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Half the current victims had symptoms so severe they required treatment at a hospital. Five victims, or 33%, developed HUS, which is typically only seen in about 5-10% of E. coli patients.
Anyone who has eaten I.M. Healthy SoyNut Butter products and subsequently developed symptoms of E. coli infection should seek immediate medical attention.
“The symptoms of STEC infections vary but often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea — often bloody — and vomiting,” CDC said. “Most people get better within 5 to 7 days, but some infections are severe or even life-threatening.”
