What’s the problem?
March 21, 2012 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a press release today stating that Southside Market & BBQ is recalling the following beef sausage products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes:
- 16 oz. packages of “Southside Market & BBQ Original Beef Sausage,” Lot # 065-E;
- 16 oz. and 48 oz. packages of “Southside Market & BBQ Original Beef Sausage,” Lot #’s 065-A, 065-B, 065-C, and 065-D;

These products were manufactured on March 5, 2012. Case labels or packaging may bear the establishment number ‘EST. 21577’ inside the USDA Mark of Inspection.
The Listeria contamination was identified during routine testing by the FSIS. To date, there have been no illnesses reported in connection with this recall. Anyone concerned about Listeria food poisoning should contact their healthcare provider immediately.
Listeria Food Poisoning (Listeriosis)
Listeriosis is a serious infection caused by eating food contaminated with the bacterium Listeria monocytogenes. The disease typically affects the elderly, pregnant women, children, and those with otherwise compromised immune systems. Signs and symptoms of Listeriosis may include:
- muscle aches
- stiff neck
- loss of balance
Nationwide, there are an estimated 1,600 cases of Listeriosis reported each year, although the actual number is likely to be much higher as most cases of food poisoning go unreported. Of the 1,600 cases reported, approximately 260 end up dying from the illness. Listeria bacteria can be killed by pasteurization and thorough cooking; however, in certain ready-to-eat foods, contamination may occur after factory cooking but before packaging. Unlike most varieties of foodborne bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes can grow and multiply in some foods in the refrigerator.
