South Carolina Bans Installation of Trinity Guardrails

South Carolina has suspended the installation of highway guardrails made by Trinity Industries, after the company was found guilty of making a secret design change that causes the systems to malfunction.

South Carolina has joined more than 30 other states in suspending the installation of highway guardrails made by Trinity Industries, after the company was found guilty of making a secret design change that causes the systems to malfunction, impaling oncoming vehicles and their passengers. Dozens of accidents — some fatal — have been reported in cars that have run off the road and collided with guardrails that malfunction and spear through the vehicles, according to lawsuits filed against Trinity.

What’s the Problem?

Nov. 26, 2014 – South Carolina’s Department of Transportation (DOT) confirmed today that the state has about 3,700 of the modified 4-inch ET-Plus guardrail systems already installed. However, the DOT says it doesn’t know where they are because at the time they were installed, the devices were on an approved products list and the state didn’t keep track of where they were placed.

Chief Engineer Leland Colvin says the state is now attempting to locate the allegedly defective Trinity guardrail systems, but they have no plans to recall them because independent safety testing is currently underway.

“We have right now no indication in South Carolina of performance issues,” said Colvin. “There is no data in South Carolina about how the device performs.”

Virginia is the only state that plans to remove the 4-inch guardrails, although more than 30 states have stopped installation of the devices. Trinity says the safety tests should be completed early next year.
