Studies Link Chemical Hair Products to Increased Cancer Risk
An October 2022 study conducted by researchers at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) [1] highlights growing concerns about the safety of chemicals in hair straighteners and hair relaxers, linking the products to an increased risk for uterine cancer in certain women.
The study included a cohort of 33,497 women in the United States between the ages of 35-74 who participated in the Sister Study [2], which seeks to identify risk factors for breast cancer and other health conditions. The participants were followed for nearly 11 years, and during that time at least 378 uterine cancer cases were diagnosed among the cohort.
That research followed a 2019 study published in the International Journal of Cancer [3] which identified a potential link between hair straighteners and hair dyes and the development of breast cancer and ovarian cancer.
Over an 8-year period, the researchers found 2,794 cases of breast cancer in women who used chemical hair straighteners. They determined that women who frequently used hair straightener products (at least every 5 to 8 weeks) had a 30% increased risk of developing breast cancer.
The researchers concluded that black women who reported using permanent hair dyes regularly were linked to a 60% increase in breast cancer diagnosis, compared to an 8% increased risk for white women.

Woman Claims Hair Relaxers Caused Uterine Cancer
A Missouri woman has filed a lawsuit [4] against L’Oréal and 5 other cosmetic manufacturers alleging that their hair-straightening products caused her to develop uterine cancer.
The complaint alleges that Plaintiff Jenny Mitchell’s cancer “was directly and proximately caused by her regular and prolonged exposure to phthalates and other endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in defendants’ hair care products.”
Mitchell was diagnosed with cancer in August 2018, at the age of 28, and was forced to undergo a hysterectomy a month after the diagnosis.
“At that time, at the age of 28, my dreams of becoming a mother were gone,” Mitchell said.

Did Manufacturers Know About the Risks of Hair Relaxers?
Studies have reported for years about the link between chemical hair relaxers and hormonal cancers, as ovarian cancer and breast cancer. The companies that make hair straighteners may claim they were unaware that their products could cause cancer; however, these manufacturers should have known about the studies linking their hair products to hormonal cancers.
Knowing the risks and continuing to produce and market a product known to be harmful could make these cosmetic companies liable to users who were injured.
