What’s the problem?
January 18, 2011 – MS Fish Corp of Brooklyn, NY is now recalling Ossie’s Schmaltz Herring distributed throughout the state of New York due to Listeria monocytogenes contamination. The problem was discovered after routine sampling found the product to be positive for the harmful bacteria. Ossie’s Schmaltz Herring is packed in a 12 oz plastic container coded 2/0311.
According to the CDC, there are approximately 2500 cases of Listeriosis reported each year, resulting in about 500 deaths. Listeriosis is caused by Listeria monocytogenes, which is a bacteria typically found in soil and water. This bacteria is different from most others that cause food poisoning in that it is capable of growing in cold temperatures such as that of a refrigerator. 25% of Listeria infections are fatal, compared to a much lower percentage for Salmonella, which is the most common food-related infection.
