What’s the Problem?
The FDA Warning applies to Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-001-01) and 8 other similar products manufactured in Mexico by Eskbiochem SA de CV. FDA said it found methanol in samples taken from several of the company’s hand sanitizers.
Exposure to methanol has been linked to side effects including:
- blurred vision
- permanent blindness
- permanent damage to the nervous system
Any form of exposure to methanol in hand sanitizers is dangerous, but the risk of effects is greatest when the sanitizers are ingested orally, either accidentally or intentionally, according to the FDA.
Consumers who purchased Saniderm Advanced Hand Sanitizer (NDC: 74589-001-01) should stop using it and dispose of it immediately. People who have been exposed to the product should seek immediate medical treatment to reverse the toxic effects of methanol poisoning, FDA said.
