What's the Problem?
Studies suggest talcum powder applied directly to the genital area or on sanitary napkins, diaphragms or condoms may be cancer-causing to the ovaries.
In fact, the American Cancer Society lists talcum powder use as a risk factor for users to develop ovarian cancer, the deadliest cancer of the female reproductive system.
The International Agency for Research on Cancer, which is part of the World Health Organization (WHO), has conducted talcum powder cancer research and classifies genital use of talc-based body powder which contained asbestos as potential risk of cancer to humans.
How Can Talcum Powder Cause Ovarian Cancer?
One theory is that when talcum powder is used for feminine hygiene, talc particles can travel through the vagina, uterus and fallopian tubes to the ovaries.
From there, it can take years to dissolve, and research shows that it can cause inflammation. Inflammation creates conditions that increase the likelihood of cancer growth, and long-term inflammation can eventually lead to the formation of cancerous tumors and other personal injuries.
Johnson & Johnson is aware of research that shows the potential increased risk of ovarian cancer with its over-the-counter products, such as Johnson’s Baby Powder and Shower to Shower body powder.
However, the company has referred to research into the matter as inconclusive and does not include an ovarian cancer warning on its talcum powder products.

Status of Lawsuits
As of December 2021, Johnson & Johnson faces nearly 40,000 lawsuits.
With mounting costs from more than $4 billion in settlements, verdicts and defense costs, in the summer of 2021, the company created a subsidiary, LTL Management LLC, to split its assets from its liabilities to manage baby powder ovarian cancer lawsuit claims.
Baby powder cancer lawsuits are filed by women who developed ovarian cancer. The claims allege that baby powder manufacturers knew their talc was contaminated by asbestos and could cause mesothelioma and ovarian cancer, but did nothing to warn consumers about the risk. Most cases are individual lawsuits but at least four class action lawsuits have been filed. Recent jury verdicts have awarded billions of dollars to plaintiffs.
