What’s the problem?
August 20, 2010 - This week, the Cook County Department of Health announced that it is investigating an outbreak of Salmonella from pickles sold at Assi Supermarket in Niles. The department said that there have been six laboratory-confirmed cases including five hospitalizations from the food.
Health department officials say all confirmed victims of Salmonella poisoning reported eating pickles made at the market and sold in plastic bags between July 25 and July 27, with an Aug. 24 sell-by date.
The Illinois Department of Public Health tested a pickle sample obtained from a family linked to the outbreak; the sample tested positive for Salmonella.
Nationwide Salmonella Outbreak
Nationwide, there's also been a spread of Salmonella poisoning from eggs harvested in Iowa. Wright County Egg has recalled over 228 million eggs after hundreds of Salmonella cases were linked to their products this summer. The eggs are marketed under the brand names Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemps.
