What’s the problem?
There are almost three times as many cases as would be expected from recent years’ trends, according to a report yesterday from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). That number likely doesn’t include most cases from the last two to three weeks, either, because case reports do not reach the CDC immediately. During that time hundreds of millions of eggs have been recalled by an Iowa-based firm, Wright County Egg, due to suspected salmonella contamination.
From May 1 to July 31, a total of 1,953 cases of Salmonella enteritidis were reported. A normal number of cases in that time period would be about 700, Dr. Christopher Braden, acting director of the CDC’s division of food-borne, waterborne and environmental diseases, said this week. The CDC is not yet sure exactly how many cases can be attributed to this particular outbreak.
The tainted eggs believed to be the source of the outbreak were distributed around the country and packaged under the names Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms and Kemp.
Contaminated eggs first were taken off shelves last Friday, but many consumers may have recalled cartons in their refrigerators. Eggs that are part of the recall should not be eaten, and can either be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased.
