Mysterious Salmonella Food Poisoning Outbreak Sickens 90 in 19 States

A recent Salmonella food poisoning epidemic that’s sickened at least 90 in 19 different states has public health officials baffled and scrambling for answers.

When most Salmonella outbreaks make the news, the contamination has already been linked to a specific food, and the public can be warned to avoid the source of the problem until authorities can take it out of circulation. But a recent Salmonella food poisoning epidemic that’s sickened at least 90 in 19 different states has public health officials baffled and scrambling for answers. Signs and symptoms of Salmonella food poisoning may include nausea, abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, and diarrhea (which may be watery or bloody).

Moon Marine Recall Update 5/17/12: Last month’s multi-state sushi recall has resulted in over 300 confirmed cases of salmonella food poisoning, and likely sickened thousands more who never reported their illness. In an update issued today by the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), federal health regulators indicate that the epidemic has resulted in a total of 304 confirmed cases of Salmonella Bareilly and a dozen cases of Salmonella Nchanga, which have caused at least 37 people to require emergency hospitalization. Salmonella Food Poisoning Update 4/13/12: Moon Marine USA Corporation (MMI) is now recalling nearly 60,000 pounds of frozen raw yellowfin tuna labeled as ‘Nakaochi Scrape’ AA or AAA because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella Bareilly, a rare but potentially-deadly foodborne pathogen. The product in question has been linked to a widespread salmonella outbreak that has caused at least 116 illnesses in 20 states and the District of Columbia. Click here to learn more.

Salmonella Food Poisoning Update 4/8/12: An outbreak of Salmonella poisoning that has sickened at least 93 in 19 states, as well as the District of Columbia, may be linked to contaminated spicy tuna rolls. An internal memo sent to staff at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) characterized the outbreak as “rapid and expanding in a number of cases.”

What’s the problem?

April 6, 2012 – As a specific cause for the new Salmonella outbreak has yet to be determined, so too does the mystery surrounding the epidemic grow: if the source of the problem could be tied to a particular food, consumers who purchased those products could be made aware of the risk. But due to the fact that a likely suspect has not been identified, health officials and the public at large are in the dark as to how to avoid being sickened.

Salmonella is a gram-negative rod-shaped bacterium that causes salmonellosis, one of the most commonly reported foodborne illnesses in the United States. In many regions of the U.S., salmonellosis is the leading cause of intestinal disease, and overall it is the second most common food poisoning illness reported after Campylobacter. Signs and symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, fever, nausea, and/or vomiting.

According to the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC), until a likely source of the outbreak is identified, it is impossible to determine which foods should be avoided. However, one connecting thread seems to be that the affected individuals may have consumed sushi or ‘related products’ prior to becoming sickened.
