Update: Trader Joe’s Recalls Hummus and Bean Dip
December 2, 2016 – Less than two weeks after Sabra recalled its hummus products, Trader Joe’s has announced its own hummus recall over similar listeria concerns. Affected products include Mediterranean Hummus and White Bean & Basil Hummus, which were distributed to Trader Joe’s stores in California, Washington, Texas and other states.
What’s the Problem?
November 21, 2016 – Affected hummus products were produced before Nov. 8 at a facility where Listeria was identified; however, the bacteria has not been found in hummus samples that have been tested, according to the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA). The products were distributed to retail outlets in the U.S. and Canada.
FDA is advising consumers to immediately discard any Sabra hummus product with a “Best Before” date through Jan. 23, 2017. The date can be found on the lid of each package.
In April 2015, Sabra recalled 30,000 cases of hummus over similar listeria concerns. That recall was ordered after inspections at a Kroger outlet in Port Huron, MI, detected the presence of listeria in prepackaged Sabra Classic Hummus products.
Listeria infection, or listeriosis, mainly affects pregnant women, newborns, the elderly, and adults with compromised immune systems. However, in some cases patients without these risk factors may develop the infection. Symptoms of listeriosis include:
- Muscle aches
If the infection spreads to the nervous system, symptoms may include:
- Stiff neck
- Confusion or changes in alertness
- Loss of balance
