What’s the Problem?

June 8, 2018 - A raw breaded chicken product that may look fully cooked was distributed to Ruby’s Pantry patrons without any cooking instructions or labels that stated the product was raw, the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) said in a news release on June 1.

If you purchased any unlabeled chicken products from Ruby’s Pantry, discard them immediately or make sure you cook them thoroughly, to a minimum internal temperature of 165°F (should be verified with a food thermometer). Failure to do so could lead to extreme food poisoning.

Symptoms of Food Poisoning

Signs and symptoms of salmonella infection include:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Abdominal cramps
  • Diarrhea
  • Fever
  • Chills
  • Headache
  • Blood in the stool

Ruby’s Pantry is cooperating with the investigation, and the company has agreed not to distribute any more unlabeled chicken products. A list of all the Wisconsin and Minnesota cities that have a Ruby’s Pantry is available at the MDH website.

Why Never to Cook Chicken in a Microwave

Chicken should never be cooked in a microwave, regardless if it is fresh. There have been numerous salmonella outbreaks over the years in which those sickened reported cooking the meat in a microwave. The appliances may have cold spots, and even if a thermometer registers the correct temperature, parts of the food could still be cold enough for bacteria to survive.
