Update: Experts Divided on Roundup Cancer Risk
March 14, 2019 - With more than 11,000 lawsuits on the books alleging that Monsanto Roundup caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Monsanto’s steadfast denial of these claims, the question remains – how dangerous is the herbicide, and should its legal status be changed? Glyphosate has long been considered by many to be completely safe because it works by inhibiting an enzyme pathway that only exists in green plants, not in humans or other animals. However, over the past 20 years, numerous studies have suggested that glyphosate man not be as safe as originally believed.
What is Roundup Ultra?
Roundup Ultra is a glyphosate-containing herbicide meant to kill living weeds, rather than seeds. The chemical is absorbed by leaves and moves throughout the entire plant to destroy annual and perennial weeds, including grasses. Roundup Ultra is intended to be used on big jobs such as lawn renovation, vegetable and flower bed preparation.
Roundup Ready Crops
Roundup has increased massively in popularity since Monsanto introduced genetically modified seeds that are resistant to glyphosate, allowing farmers to spray the herbicide without worrying about harming their crops. These so-called “Roundup Ready crops” include plants like corn, soybean, and cotton, and they account for over 270 million pounds of crops each year in the U.S.
What’s the Problem?
In July 2015, the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) issued a final health assessment of glyphosate, determining that the chemical is ”probably carcinogenic to humans” after being linked to various forms of non-Hodgkin lymphoma including lymphocytic lymphoma, chronic lymphocytic leukemia, B-cell lymphoma, hairy cell leukemia, and others.
What Types of Cancer has Roundup Been Linked To?
- Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma
- Large Diffuse B-cell Lymphoma
- Follicular Lymphoma
- Cutaneous T-Cell Lymphoma
- Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma
- Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
- Small Lymphocytic Lymphoma
- Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL)
- Primary Central Nervous System (CNS) Lymphoma

Most cases involving product liability allege that a product was sold with design, manufacturing, and/or marketing defects, which typically refers to a company’s failure to warn of a certain potential health risk. In the case of Roundup Ultra, our attorneys suspect that patients may be able to take legal action in light of claims that Monsanto failed to adequately warn doctors and patients about the risk of cancer.
