Update: Experts Divided on Roundup Cancer Risk
March 14, 2019 - With more than 11,000 lawsuits on the books alleging that Monsanto Roundup caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma, and Monsanto’s steadfast denial of these claims, the question remains – how dangerous is the herbicide, and should its legal status be changed? Glyphosate has long been considered by many to be completely safe because it works by inhibiting an enzyme pathway that only exists in green plants, not in humans or other animals. However, over the past 20 years, numerous studies have suggested that glyphosate man not be as safe as originally believed.
What is Roundup Ultra?
Roundup Ultra is just like the original Roundup - it’s a glyphosate-based herbicide used to kill weeds - except that Roundup Ultra attacks the plant itself, whereas the original goes after seeds. The glyphosate in Roundup Ultra is absorbed by leaves and moves throughout the entire plant to destroy weeds on large-scale projects, such as lawn renovation, vegetable and flower bed preparation.
What’s the Problem?
Lawsuits allege that Monsanto failed to adequately warn about the cancer risk associated with the glyphosate in its Roundup herbicide, even though the company has known about this risk since the 1970s. Furthermore, the company has been accused of downplaying and even actively hiding information about the Roundup / cancer risk from the public.
