Update: Exposure to Roundup “Most Significant Contributing Factor” in Plaintiffs’ Cancer, Pathologist Says
April 9, 2019 – A pathologist from the City of Hope National Medical Center in Duarte, California, who claims to have poured over more than 2,000 pages of medical records for the plaintiffs in the next Roundup cancer trial concluded that exposure to glyphosate was the “most significant contributing factor” in causing their development of non-Hodgkin lymphoma. Dr. Dennis Weisenburger, who was hired by the plaintiffs and has authored nearly 400 peer-reviewed articles on non-Hodgkin lymphoma, seemed confident in his assertion that Roundup was the likely causative agent in both plaintiffs’ development of the disease.
Roundup and Lymphoma
According to a National Pesticide Information Center (NPIC) fact sheet, exposure to glyphosate — the active ingredient in Roundup — may be carcinogenic. Additionally, studies have linked use of glyphosate to lymphoma, a type of cancer that begins in white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lawsuits allege that plaintiffs were diagnosed with a certain type of lymphoma, called primary central nervous system (CNS) lymphoma, after long-term exposure to Roundup.
Primary Central Nervous System Lymphoma Symptoms
Signs and symptoms of primary nervous system lymphoma may include:
- Changes in speech or vision
- Unexplained weight loss
- Changes in personality
- Numbness to extreme temperatures
- Paralysis on one side of the body
Primary CNS Lymphoma Staging
After primary central nervous system lymphoma has been diagnosed, tests will be conducted to find out whether cancer cells have spread to other parts of the body. The process used to determine whether the disease has migrated is referred to as staging. It is important to know if cancer has spread to other parts of the body in order to maximize the effectiveness of treatment.
Treatment for primary CNS lymphoma typically includes a combination of chemotherapy and radiation therapy. Steroid therapy may often be administered before chemo, as this helps reduce swelling around the tumor, and may even shrink the tumor, reducing the raised intracranial pressure.
The average life expectancy for patients with primary central nervous system lymphoma is 18 months to 2 years; however, some people live much longer. Some patients with this type of brain tumor develop it as a result of having AIDS, which can make it more difficult to treat effectively.
What Causes Primary CNS Lymphoma?
While the exact causes of primary CNS lymphoma are unknown, studies have linked the cancer to use of Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides. Additionally, the disease has been associated with conditions that affect the immune system such as HIV/AIDS, and in patients who have had an organ transplant.
